NATIONAL rep Abid Hussain will defend the 2014 Total Fiji Limited-sponsored Vatukoula Open Championship which starts at the Vatukoula Golf Club tomorrow.
Hussain goes into the 36 holes tournament as the favourites after finishing second behind RC Manubhai Ba Open winner Sam Lee last week.
Lee who created history by setting a new 36 holes course record at the Ba Open is not competing this weekend event.
Hussain will face stiff competition from fellow Nadi Airport Golf Club member Roneel Prakash who holds the Vatukoula course record.
Vatukoula’s hilly course is regarded as the most challenging in the country.
A total of 40 players will participate in the two-day event.
Tournament director Robert Elliot said the golfing skills of the participants would be tested.
“Abid will be returning to defend his title,” Elliot said.
“The other top contenders are Suva-based Olaf Frank Grant Allen, Vijay Krishna Singh and Nigel Goundan.
“The Western contenders include seven-time Ba Open winner Anuresh Chandra and Ba schoolteacher Asish Chand.
“Rohit Chandra and Munesh Prasad who is the youngest president of the Nadi Airport Golf Club.”
An interesting battle will also loom in the nett divison.
The title contenders in the nett division are newly appointed sales manager for property.com.fj, Sanjay Krishna, Vatukoula’s Samisoni, Ba’s Alvin Singh and regional manager west for Creative Company Vijay Krishna.
Prizes will be offered in the A, B, C grades and overall nett and gross divisions.
“The important rule for the event will be “play the lie.”
“A rule that not many players are comfortable with,” Elliot said.
Total Fiji will also give-away prizes and lunch.
The tournament will tee-off at 8am.
