Hussain to defend title, faces stiff battle

FIJI’S number one amateur golfer Abid Hussain will defend the TPR Warehouse sponsored Eastern Amateur Championship which will be played at the Fiji Golf Club course in Vatuwaqa, Suva this weekend.

Hussain will face stiff competition from James Pridgeon who won the Pacific Harbour Open in January, Suva and Natadola Open winner Mohammed Rizwan and Olaf Allen Junior the former Fiji number one amateur golfer who will have the home course advantage.

Golf Fiji secretary Nigel Goundan said deadly Ba duo Asish Chand and Rohit Chandra will pose a threat as well.

“Then there are the likes of Isei Waqa, Alvin Sharma, Ravinesh Goundar, Nilesh Chand from Nadi and Jainendra Prasad of Labasa who will be out to claim top honours,” Goundan said.

“TPR Warehouse an importer and distributor of home decoration materials have come on board once again to sponsor the event which is sanctioned by Golf Fiji.

“After the successful inaugural tournament in 2017, there is big interest this year.

“Because of the big support from the Suva golfers the tournament will be played at the Vatuwaqa greens again.

“The course is in good condition and is drying up quickly after the weekend rain. The management and committee of the Fiji Golf Club are working hard and putting all their efforts to make the course more challenging for all golfers.”

The top golfers in the tournament who are vying for world ranking credentials will play 54 holes with 27 holes on each day.

The others in the A, B, C, ladies and junior divisions will play 18 holes on each day.

“Golf Fiji has a vision to develop the sport and provide its members more international level competitions,” Goundan said.

“This year we will send a development squad of four golfers to the upcoming MPI Saujana Amateur Championship in Malaysia.

“This international event will give the upcoming golfers a break and experience to play at a high level. Also juniors will be charged half the entry fees for all Golf Fiji organised tournaments throughout the country.”
