THE Health and Medical Services Ministry has a specific budget allocated for preventing hospital-acquired infections, says acting superintendent of the CWM Hospital Dr James Fong. Dr Fong said these were infections that come out of the hospital itself.

“One of the problems of building any hospital in the world is that when you build a hospital, all the sickness is closed up in one place, you will encourage the growth of some kind of infections because all the sick people are in one place,” he said.

He said therefore any hospital should have in place measures to reduce the risk of hospital-acquired infections.

“Hospital-acquired infections is an inherent risk of building a hospital, the hospital will save lives and will do a lot of good but this risk will remain.”

Dr Fong adds one of the significant moves made by the Government is allocating a chunk of the budget just for implementing measures to prevent hospital-acquired infections.

“I think one of the things that has been done by the Government is, Government has allocated quite a significant chunk of budget just for the purpose of implementing strategies that will prevent hospital-acquired infections,” he said.
