BRITISH High Commissioner to Fiji Melanie Hopkins visited the Commonwealth War Cemetery at Resevoir Rd in Suva on Friday to lay a wreath, marking the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.

Speaking to the media during her visit, Ms Hopkins commended the contribution of Fijian sons and daughters who served in the British Army.

“During this pandemic time, I hope that people will be celebrating in their own way from their homes here in Fiji and in England,” Ms Hopkins said.

“Towns and cities around England had planned parades and street parties to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day but the events are cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.”

Ms Hopkins said because of the lockdown, events had been cancelled but councils, neighbours and families had found different ways to celebrate.

She also thanked the family of Sergeant Ratu Dovi Komaisavai, a former fighter pilot based in South England who was buried at the Stonefall Cemetery.
