British High Commissioner to Fiji Melanie Hopkins today laid wreaths to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe.
In her address, she thanked the people of Fiji for the sons and daughters who served in the British Army from then to the present time.
“During this pandemic time, I hope that people will be celebrating in their own way from their home here in Fiji and in England,” Ms Hopkins said.
“Towns and cities around England had planned parades and street parties to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day but with events cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.”

Ms Hopkins said due to the lockdown, events had been cancelled but councils, neighbours and families had found different ways to celebrate.
The Prince of Wales would lead the nation’s two-minute silence to mark the 75th anniversary.
Ms Hopkins said she also wanted to thank the family of flight sergeant Ratu Dovi Komaisavai, a former fighter pilot based in South England who was buried at Stonefell Cemetary.
She also gave her best wishes to those who celebrated VE Day in Fiji and abroad.
