Home at last for stray dogs

THE Greater Good Foundation says it has been overwhelmed with the response of animal lovers who responded to a request to house stray dogs captured and kept at the Vunato pound, Lautoka.
Foundation senior field officer Kamini Narayan said after discovering the dogs’ plight early this month, it took to social media and by word of mouth to find homes for the animals.
“There were 16 dogs in the pound and we would like to thank the Lautoka City Council for allowing us to find homes for 14 of the dogs,” she said.
“We put up posts on Facebook and got a lot of responses and we also rang our friends and family members and managed to get a number of homes housed that way too.
“What we have found is that a lot of the dogs were not strays because they were well fed and we could tell they had been well looked after by their owners.
“This is a sad story because there a lot of homes with secured compounds which have pets but because the owners don’t want their well-manicured lawns and flower beds affected, they keep their dogs outside the front gates.
“They want the dogs for security but they just don’t want them inside their yards.”
Ms Narayan said dog owners needed to take responsibility for their pets instead of allowing them to loiter and get trapped.
