A total of nine hockey teams met at the Fiji National Hockey Centre to compete in the round-robin tournament of the 2022 Easter Games Hockey competition in Suva yesterday.
Four women’s teams which includes Marist Heart, Marist Souls, Stingers Fusion and ventures Women competed in the hot Suva sun yesterday.
A total of five men’s hockey teams also competed. They are Stingers Kaukauwa (Suva), Stingers Heat (Lautoka), Ventures Men, Naidrodro and Suva Outsiders made up of players from Suva and Nadi. Tournament official Terence Corrie said this was the first tournament since 2019.
“We were having friendly games last year but the second lockdown in April brought all this to a standstill,” Corrie said.
He said the small turnout in the number of teams competing in this year’s tournament was attributed to the long break.
“I remember last time there used to be a lot of people and a lot of teams participating.
“But it’s good to see everyone again and let’s just hope that we keep the spark in the game alive.”
Between the five men teams, only the top four teams will play in today’s semi-finals.
Meanwhile, all four women teams immediately qualify for today’s semi-finals.
