Historic first win

THE Flying Fijians’ historic 21-14 win over France yesterday was a victory that can be likened to the biblical David vs Goliath story.

France, a hugely resourced country with more than 67 million people and about 70 high profile clubs at its disposal, was humbled in Paris by a nation of less than one million and a rugby team that operated on a shoestring budget.

For Fiji, it was not only about proving a point after more than 10 attempts to topple Les Bleus over the past 60 years, it was also a signal to tier one nations that Fiji was more than ready to play against the big boys come the Rugby World Cup in Japan next year.
