Hindu devotees across the country celebrated the festival of Ram Navami yesterday to mark the birth of Lord Rama, a day that also marked an end to nine days of fasting.

For the Satsang Ramayan Mandali in Nadawa, the funds collected from the event would be distributed to the Fiji Cancer Society and WOWS Kids Fiji.

Mandali spokesperson Rajnesh Lingam said the NGOs would receive $200 each.

“We did it in 2020 and last year we did not celebrate Ram Navami and Krishna Janam Asthmi so we could not make any donation,” he said.

“Donors from Fiji and overseas also supported the mandali.

“The mandali members have been involved in humanitarian and charity work, distributing food supplies and water during natural disasters.

“The purpose of the mandali is to get people together, foster love, unity and togetherness.”

The Hindu festival Ram Navami is part of the spring Navrati and falls on the ninth day of the Hindu calendar month of Chaitra.
