The High Court is expected to rule on an application by the Attorney-General to strike out an application for leave to apply for judicial review by a dropped provisional candidate from the 2022 General Election.
Seremaia Tuiteci filed the application for leave for judicial review after his hopes for candidacy was dashed by the Electoral Commission last year.
Tuiteci was announced as a provisional candidate for the Social Democratic Liberal Party and later dropped for “social media outbursts”.
He told the court he filed the application on the premise of his provisional candidacy being rejected by the Supervisor of Elections.
He appealed to the Electoral Commission which reaffirmed the supervisor’s rejection of his candidacy.
Tuiteci said his candidacy was rejected because he was alleged to have changed his name to Seremaia Tui, which was the name on his birth certificate.
He said he needed to clear his name before the next elections and that the A-G had called him and asked him to withdraw the matter in February.
High Court judge Justice Yohan Liyanage adjourned the matter for ruling on July 11.
