MURDER is the most serious crime.
This was the comment made by High Court judge Justice Riyaz Hamza in Suva today when sentencing Nikasio Tupou after convicting him for the murder of his de-facto partner.
The court heard that Tupou, 49, murdered his de-facto partner while she was pregnant with his child on February 4, 2010, in Samabula.
Justice Hamza said Tupou admitted stabbing the deceased and when she fled from him, he grabbed her and struck her with a cane knife several times.
He said Tupou submitted to the court that causing the deceased’s death was not pre-meditated or pre-planned and that it was an act in the spur of the moment.
Tupou has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 12 years to be served before a pardon may be considered.
