High Court jails Holland St rapist to 23 years

A MAN who brutally raped a 23-year-old woman has been sentenced by High Court judge Justice Salesi Temo to 23 years imprisonment.

Isoa Rainima is convicted of one count each of assault with intent to commit rape, sexual assault, criminal intimidation, robbery and seven counts of rape.

The court heard that Rainima on December 30, 2016, along Holland Street in Suva, came from behind and shoulder tackled the victim then threw her over the metal railings.

Justice Temo said Rainima threw several heavy punches to the victim’s face and head.

He said when she cried out to raise alarm, Rainima swore at her and threatened her not to misbehave.

“You were extremely brutal to her. You confined and dominated her for an hour,” said Justice Temo.

For count one, Rainima has been sentenced to four years imprisonment, 16 years imprisonment for counts two to eight, four years for counts nine, three years for count 10, and six years for count 11.

The court has ordered that the sentences for assault with intent to rape, rape and criminal intimidation be served consecutively.

The final sentence for the 11 offences is 23 years imprisonment with a non-parole period of 20 years.
