A WOMAN who killed her baby has been sentenced to three years and 10 months imprisonment.

Sangeeta Devi was charged with one count of manslaughter.

The court was informed that Devi had delivered her baby but she did not sought medical attention.

Her baby died as a result of excessive blood loss.

High Court judge Justice Vinsent Perera described the act as a serious crime because it involved the death of an innocent human being.

Justice Perera told Devi that she had brought an infant baby into this world and it was her responsibility to look after her.

He added the sentence must serve as a reminder that the court and the society denounced such act.
