Architects in Fiji face unique challenges blending the colonial past with modern facilities while preserving cultural heritage sustainably, says Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad.

Speaking during the Rejuvenation of the Fiji Association of Architects reception at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva last Friday, Prof Prasad highlighted the important roles of the country’s architects.

“Architects have a modern role to play in not just designing, but you are custodians of our past, shapers of our present, and the architects of the future,” Prof Prasad said.

He emphasised the importance of climate resilience in infrastructure development and the Government’s willingness to collaborate with architects.

“Like Fiji, many of our Pacific Island countries who suffer from natural disasters, especially cyclones and floods, we need our infrastructure to be climate resilient.

“I am pleased that you have resurrected the association and I hope this association will work closely with the Government, and we, the Government, look forward to working with you as well.”

Prof Prasad said there was a need for more collaboration to address building code regulations and preserve cultural heritage while incorporating modern technology. “Once we have established that collaboration we want some meaningful outcomes.

“There are a number of challenges that we have whether it’s looking at our building code, what are some of the regulations, legislations that we need to improve or change.

“We are open to it and we will need your feedback.”
