COMMUNITIES for Communities has been helping families of Tavuya Village in Rewa build new homes.

One of the directors of Communities for Communities, Rob Lynch, said they had just finished a project in Indonesia and Habitat for Humanity in Australia suggested a project in Fiji following Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston.

“We come in when people find it difficult to find things to build or to repair things so the information that we got from Habitat for Humanity Fiji was that there were some houses that were badly damaged and needed repair,” he said.

“There are old people who were living in those houses and could not make a living anymore.

So there were plenty of places here where people just did not have the means, they did not have the strength and health or the age to be able to earn an income to rebuild their homes.”

Recently the small charity group had just handed over two newly built homes to its new owners in Tavuya.

Habitat for Humanity Fiji volunteer program supervisor Jotishna Reddy says Communities for Communities had been doing smaller projects in Tavuya.

“Apart from the houses, they did footpaths, toilets, kindergartens, evacuation centre, and retro fittings for the houses,” she said.
