VILLAGERS of Vanuabalavu, Lau, who are some of the most affected by Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston should expect some assistance from the New Zealand Defence Force.
Lieutenant Colonel Mike Van Welie, the force’s senior national officer in an interview, said they were working with the Fijian Government through the National Disaster Management Office.
“We are doing what the Fijian Government through the NDMO would like us to do and at the moment they have told us that Northern Lau is their highest priority so we are working towards that,” Lt-Col Van Welie said.
“The focus is on doing what we can on the basis of the NDMO.
“We will be here for as long as the Fijian Government requests support from NZ. We are here to work with the Fijian Government.
“Our 37 engineers arrived two days ago and they are working with the RFMF engineers in Tailevu and they are rebuilding a school and jetties.”
