Help for girls’ event

ORGANISERS of the 2016 Vodafone Fiji Primary School Football Championship wants to expand the girls competition next year.

Association president Ami Chand said the future of the national women’s team depended on the development of girls football in the country.

“We will try to get more teams to join the competition in the primary schools Inter-District Championship,” he said.

“There would not be many teams next year but slowly we will increase the numbers.

“As they proceed we will have a competitive competition.

“This tournament serves as a foundation and we need to start from the bottom since the boys team’s started from the bottom and they are doing well.”

Rewa received a trophy and a medal each from Vodafone and $100 prizemoney for winning the girls competition yesterday.

Teams had been facing difficulties in the transportation to the venue. Chand said they were trying to help them to take some burden off.

“We are giving teams preparation grants for them to prepare for the tournament,” he added.

“More than $14,000 will be paid to the districts from the total sponsorship of $25,000.

“From the sponsorship we would not be able to pay everything but something will be paid to them. Since last year we gave them preparation grants of $200 and this year we gave it when they arrived.”
