A TROUGH of low pressure is over the Fiji Group will continue to bring heavy rain over most parts of the country this week.

Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) director Ravind Kumar said they would not speculate on whether the system would develop into a tropical cyclone.

“We will be monitoring the situation and letting the public know if anything new comes up,” he said.

“For now, a heavy rain warning is in force for Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands and northern Lau Group while a heavy rain alert is in force for the rest of Fiji.”

Flash flooding of low-lying areas can be expected as more rain, heavy at times, has been forecasted.

People have been advised to remain vigilant and heed weather advisories when issued.

Meanwhile, a strong wind warning is also in force for southwest Viti Levu waters, Kadavu and Vatu-i-Ra passages, southern Koro Sea and southern Lau waters.

Mariners can also expect easterly wind ranging from 20 to 25 knots accompanied by rough seas and moderate south-easterly swells.

There will be poor visibility in areas of heavy showers and thunderstorms.
