THE visit by the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, to the Suva Municipal Market yesterday was cut short as it was hard for security personnel to control the crowd.

According to the program, the Duchess was scheduled to meet female vendors who had been empowered through the UN Women’s Markets for Change project.

Her encounter with women vendors and members of the public was rather brief as she walked through the market entrance to greet those who were present.

Satya Wati, a woman vendor, said she was stunned and excited at the same time when she saw the Duchess walk past her table.

“She is so beautiful, I love how she smiled at everyone even though she was having a hard time trying to move around the market,” Ms Wati said.

“I have been a vendor for the past 35 years and this has been one of the best surprises ever and I thank the royal couple for coming to Fiji.”

Hundreds of Fijians were present at the market to be part of the event.
