SULIASI Vakatora first stumbled on Maria Vatunilagi in a customer service job interview they had both applied for eight years ago.

Ms Vatunilagi was on a break from medical school when she met up with this young gentleman from Naivilaca, Noco in Rewa who was just looking for a career.

This was the beginning of their friendship which later bloomed into a serious relationship and love. “We both worked together for three months until Maria had to go back to complete her studies,” Mr Vakatora said.

“In this short period, we came to know each other very well as good friends.

“On February 6, 2014, I asked Maria out to the movies. We met up again and everything went uphill from there. I asked her out and she said yes.”

A few months after, Ms Vatunilagi had to move down to Nadi and worked there for a few months.

She would travel to Suva on certain weekends only and they would meet up

From there, the couple both knew that if they could face a distant relationship, they were ready to face anything together.

Their relationship further bloomed two years ago, the day they both became parents to their daughter Alma-Lisa Vakatora.

Mr Vakatora is a sales support officer at the Kontiki Finance Ltd while his wife from Ekubu, Vatulele, is a radiographer/sonographer at the Suva MIOT Pacific Hospital.

A few weeks ago, the couplew celebrated and sealed their love for each other in a simple yet elegant wedding at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Suva.

About 150 family members, friend and loved ones gathered for the special occasion to witness the newly-weds confessing their love for each other in front of God and their loved ones during the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony.

The bride wore a custom made long white semi-traditional/modern lace dress made by the team at the House of Mausio during the church ceremony which complemented the groom’s three-piece-suit.

Her bridal party also wore custom made pieces from House of Mausio and they changed into similar pieces for the reception. “We both liked to keep things simple.

Our wedding was held at the Sacred Heart Cathedral Suva.

“Our ceremony was officiated by Father Iowane Vodosiro and we were lucky enough to have the choir from Our Lady of Fatima Parish (Nadera) to provide the beautiful hymns.

“We planned for an intimate wedding of close friends and family of close to 150 guests. We were so grateful for the love and support we received on our big day from both family and friends.”

Although they did not have a specific theme for the ceremony, they did choose the colour green for our reception dinner. The reception was alight with relatives and friends turning up with different shades and patterns of green.

A traditional iTataunaki and tevutevu were part of the ceremony which saw the sending off of the bride to her new home with her family’s hopes that she would be loved and cared for always.
