WHO says happiness cannot be bought? When Sir Thomas Lipton launched his own tea brand in 1890, he had a vision to make tea accessible to the masses at the most affordable prices without compromising on the quality — thus seeing millions of happy faces across the globe.
In order to make prices affordable, Sir Thomas purchased his own tea gardens in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, making the cost of operations and reliable supply of tea as smooth as possible.
Staying true to this vision, Sir Thomas arranged packaging and shipping at low costs and sold his tea in packets by the pound (454g), half pound (227g), and quarter pound (113g), with the advertising slogan: “Direct from the tea gardens to the teapot.”
Lipton tea became an immediate success in the United States. Thomas Lipton was knighted by Queen Victoria, who made him Sir Thomas Lipton in 1898 at the age of forty-eight.
While the brand is now owned by Unilever – a multinational fast moving consumer goods conglomerate, the vision and passion initiated by Sir Thomas Lipton 128-years-ago continues to be the success behind the Lipton brand.
