Update: 1:02PM Bethany Hamilton has caused a sizeable upset at the World Surf League 2016 Fiji Women’s Pro at Tavarua.
Hamilton, 28, had to be at her best to knock out world number one and series leader Tyler Wright in her Round 2.
The popular Hawaiian, who lost her left arm in a shark attack in 2003, trailed Wright for much of the heat but caught a barrel with 10 minutes remaining, adding some strong carves to take her score to 16.10.
Wright (14.90) was unable to respond and Hamilton claimed a major scalp, despite Wright surfing a largely mistake-free heat.
Earlier in the morning, Sage Erickson and Bianca Buitendag advanced through to Round 3 of the competition.
Round 2 heats will continue throughout the day, with a decision to be made as to when Round 3 will go ahead later this afternoon.
