THE Chand family of couple Nitesh Chand, formerly of Tabia, Labasa, and Shallu, formerly of Ba, brought their children Naisha, 8, and son Viaan, 4 to the New Zealand 7s in Hamilton yesterday.

It is their first time to the New Zealand 7s.

They live in Wellington and the trip yesterday was to reconnect their children to their roots — Fiji.

“Our children were born in New Zealand and this tournament helps us teach them to reconnect to their people,” Nitesh said.

His search for greener pastures since a young lad from his Tabia Settlement home had been rewarded with a good job and happy family in NZ.

“I left home on January 26, 1999, as a young man looking for work. I joined Coca-Cola Amatil (Fiji) Ltd in Suva. Exactly 10 years later, we migrated to New Zealand.”

He now works for Vehicle Testing New Zealand Ltd, a company based in Wellington, that carries out NZ government-mandated warrant of fitness and inspections of motor vehicles. It is the largest vehicle inspection company in NZ.

“He has a good job now, enough money and we live happily as a family,” Shallu said.

“Today (yesterday) is the 10th anniversary of our arrival in New Zealand and we want to celebrate that with the Fiji team and Fijians who turn up at the Hamilton 7s,” Nitesh said.
