Huge thunderstorms and heavy rain brought with it hailstorms on the village of Qalinasavu on the Nadarivatu highlands on Friday afternoon.

Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) church pastor Marika Valetini said the discovery of hail pieces was made by small children a little after 3pm.

“It has been hot here in Nadarivatu in the past few months and on Friday there was a heavy rain and children were enjoying their rain bath when they discovered the hail pieces on the village ground,” Pastor Marika said.

“I have been here for four years and this is the first time I have seen this, and it is such a unique discovery.

“Children were playing and picking hail pieces for at least 30 minutes before the rain stopped, and they disappeared as well.”

Pastor Marika said the discovery brought excitement to villagers, and they enjoyed every moment of it before they disappeared again.

He said he heard stories of hail pieces discovered in some parts of Fiji, and to actually witness and hold the pieces in his hands was quite a unique opportunity for him personally.

The internet states that hail generally forms when there’s a severe thunderstorm in the vicinity and can be a warning to monitor local weather reports closely for lightning and torrential rain.
