THE Vodafone Fiji Gujarati Sports Association celebrated Constitution Day by enjoying their 63rd football tournament at the Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.

Lautoka, Nadi, Lami, Navua, Rewa and Suva are the participating teams battling it out for the prestigious trophy that will be decided on Sunday.

Association president Sanjay Patel aims to revive the association and ignite the competition level in the future.

“The number of teams has decreased compared to the previous years because most of us have migrated,” Patel said.

“We are trying to increase the number of participating teams next year and also include other sports apart from football.”

Patel said from 2014 to date, the competition had been intense and the past result said it all.

“In 2014 to 2017, Rewa, Suva Nadi and Lautoka were winners and there hasn’t been a team that kept the trophy for two or three years.

“The tournament is about bringing all Gujuratis together and celebrating through sports and we will try and increase the numbers of sports and invite others to join in.”

Meanwhile, the teams from the western side started off the first day of the tournament on a high note after Nadi defeated Lami 1-0, while Lautoka thrashed Rewa 5-0.

The competition continues today and the finals to be held tomorrow at the Ratu Cakobau Park.
