Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says Fiji is fully supportive of a “greener and bluer” global economy, as is supported by the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.

Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in San Francisco this week, Mr Rabuka said substantial investment in infrastructure and innovation and support is crucial from development partners.

“Government is accelerating Fiji’s move towards a greener future,” he said.

“We are endeavouring to mobilise and facilitate finance for green investments, and we are interested in exploring ways to de-risk investments and using development finance to unlock private capital.”

He also provided an update on Fiji’s first sovereign blue bond earlier this month and stated that Fiji had also partnered with the Climate Investment Fund to upgrade power stations and transmission lines throughout the country.

Fiji, he said, also created new sources of renewable energy and helped to fund the electrification of our maritime zone and rural communities.

“Inadequate and outdated infrastructure constraints Fiji’s economic growth and regional economic integration and investment in infrastructure is a catalyst for private sector investment which drives sustainable economic growth.”
