Prime Minister and Minister for Sugar Voreqe Bainimarama says as part of a soil improvement initiative, the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji and Fiji Sugar Corporation rolled out a green manuring program.

Speaking during debate recently on Sugar Research Institute of Fiji’s Consolidated Review Report 2008-2015 in Parliament, he said so far, 174 growers have planted cane using green manuring crops.

Mr Bainimarama said this was one of the many initiatives designed to improve cane production in a more sustainable manner.

“In terms of plans, a subcommittee consisting of heads of all industry institutions is jointly developing a five-year crop development plan that will be implemented for the sustainability of the sugar industry,” he said.
