When Mohammed Sagaitu was incarcerated into the Nasinu Correction Facility, he thought his life and contribution to society had come to an end.

With a nine-year sentence hanging over his head, the future looked grim.

Mr Sagaitu, however, took up an opportunity offered by the Fiji Corrections Service to learn a trade and yesterday he graduated with a National Certificate in Automotive Mechanic (Level 1).

He was among the eight serving inmates who graduated from the facility.

“When I first walked into it I had no knowledge about it and I am glad that I have learned so much,” he said.

“I dedicate this to everyone at home and all those that gave me this opportunity.”

Mr Sagaitu urged inmates to work hard and grasp any opportunity of education available within the facility.

“If this opportunity is given to you, take it and do not let that moment go past you because you never know it might not knock on your door again.”

Mr Sagaitu’s family was also present at his graduation ceremony.
