Miriama Radiniulele has started saving from whatever she earns by selling vegetables along the Logani roadside in Tailevu to prepare for her grandchildren’s school meals when school resumes.

“I have grandchildren and now, since they are at home, we eat whatever we have,” she said.

“We have to save enough for their food and bus fare as sometimes when it’s late, we have to pay for their bus fare which is extra cost for us.

“We sell vegetables along the roadside and from this week, we have decided to save some money so that we can buy stationery and food items for them.”

The grandmother of two said they started selling vegetables along the roadside after the lockdown this year.

“Before the lockdown, my husband was working so we hardly sold vegetables along the roadside but now, it has become a full-time job.”

Mrs Radiniulele said after the lockdown, her husband was unemployed and life became difficult for them.

“Life is very difficult for us, there’s no job and we are thinking how we will manage to send our grandchildren to school. We only earn $30 a week by selling but that can only cater for a few things.

“Whatever we earn, we use it to get flour or rice for our grandchildren because they get fed up of eating cassava every day.”
