PEOPLE who tagged programs such as the Help for Home and Farm CARE initiative as freebies have been branded as “heartless people”.

While making her maiden speech in Parliament yesterday, Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Veena Bhatnagar said while the FijiFirst Government continued to create equitable forms of opportunities and assistance for the Fijian people to get back on their feet, there were some heartless people who had tagged these programs as handouts.

“This was outright disrespectful and an insult to our people who were in dire need of assistance at that time,” Ms Bhatnagar said.

“FijiFirst believes, no one owes us a living, we will avoid creating a dependency syndrome.

“But this does not mean we will neglect the poor and needy, we will continue to reach out to the vulnerable and disadvantaged,” she said.
