All Fijians on high commissioner and ambassador assignments abroad will be recalled. Some will be axed and others reassigned, says Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

He said this during a media conference in Suva yesterday where he also said the only ones who would not lose their jobs were career civil servants.

“It’s a normal thing whenever there is a change of government or change of political parties in government that the ambassadors and high commissioners are recalled,” the PM said.

“Normally they come back for briefing, in some cases they do not go back because the policies they have been promoting or asked to promote will differ.

“So they will come back. If they are career civil servants they will be given opportunities to go into other areas of the civil service.”

Mr Rabuka said it was critical that those deployed in overseas missions were capable of undertaking the role.

“It’s only right for the Government to send out representatives of the highest level internationally – those that will speak comfortably about the policies of the new Government.”

When asked how soon the ambassadors and high commissioners would be recalled, the PM said it would depend on the Public Service Commission.

“As soon as the Public Service (Commission) chair comes back to brief me on who is where and who might be up there to act in the position and who might come back.”
