MEMBERS of the Fiji Sports Journalists Association now have more chance to improve their work, thanks to Government, Oceania National Olympic Committee (ONOC), FASANOC and stakeholders who took part in the two-day Fiji Sports Media Symposium in Suva.

FSMA had been told that Government, through the Fiji National Sports Commission will allocate funds to help in training programs and workshops to help upgrade sports journalists.

This was revealed by commission chairman Peter Mazey while speaking at the closing of the symposium yesterday afternoon at the Holiday Inn, Suva.

In another exciting development, ONOC president Dr Robin Mitchel said AIPS, the world governing body of sports journalists, which included FSMA, was willing to send a lecturer on sports journalism to train Fijian journalists.

Meanwhile, former Fijian athlete and Weightlifting Fiji president Atma Maharaj challenged FMSA members to improve their work in sports news dissemination to the public.

“Sports need the media to cover stories and messages. There is someone somewhere you might inspire and somebody to be able to become a champion athlete, ” Maharaj said.

“This is a great initiative by FSMA but you should ask if you are a learning organisation, or take the attitude that you are great with the power of the pen.

“Take time to critic what you’re doing.

“Know your opposition, learn from each other, know the stories you covering, know the international media and follow the best practices and challenge yourself to be better.” The FASANOC-funded symposium was opened on Tuesday by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Sports, Maretino Nemani, and speeches and presenters included FASANOC president Joe Rodan, Matai Akauola, Leone Cabenatabua, Fred Wesley, USP lecturer Dr Shalendra Singh, Netball Fiji’s Vivian Coster, Fiji National Rugby League chairman Peni Musunamasi and Fiji Bati coach Brandon, Women in Sports Commission chairwoman Hamidan Bibi, and Fiji Games chef de mission Patrick Bower.
