INSTEAD of wasting public funds on holding the National Sugar Policy consultations, Government should invest in a crop diversification program for cane growers, says the National Farmers Union.
“The stark reality is that the long term economic sustainability of the sugar industry is in serious doubt,” claimed union general secretary and former prime minister Mahendra Chaudhry.
“Cane farmers need to wake up to this reality and take steps to supplement their incomes through cash crops and livestock farming both for domestic consumption and for export.”
