Government will enforce a new policy that will ensure the removal of people from informal settlements who previously owned properties.

This was revealed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka yesterday while addressing journalists on the Cabinet’s decision to approve the new informal settlement upgrade program (ISUP) lot allocation policy on Tuesday.

He said the policy would facilitate the issuance of long-term leases of 99 years for Ledrusasa in Nadi, Cuvu in Sigatoka and Waidamudamu near Koronivia which comprised 451 households. He said the policy had considered the significant changes in informal settlements across the nation.

Mr Rabuka said it would address eligibility for lots, price of lots, government subsidy and restriction on sale and transfer of allocated lots.

He said for one to be eligible they must reside in the settlement when the ministry was conducting the socio-economic survey, have not previously or currently owned any other property at the time of lodging application and be a Fijian citizen.
