Government cleans, assesses evacuation centers

Update: 5:21PM THIRTY NINE evacuation centers were operational in the western division, housing 2,244 evacuees.

The divisional commissioner west is working with the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) to coordinate the government?s response.

According to a government statement sent earlier today, government response has focused on clearing debris immediately after the floods.

This work was conducted by the National Fire Authority, the Republic of Fiji Military Force, the Fiji Police Force, and the Fiji Corrections Services.

“Clearing of debris now makes way for the deployment of public health teams from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services to conduct health assessments of evacuation centers and affected communities,” the statement said.

“The teams are conducting health screening, general health awareness, and inspection of sanitation and hygiene conditions. Disinfection and mosquito spraying is also being carried out where required. The health officers are also monitoring food and water quality.”

There are 96 government personnel working with public health teams to conduct health assessments at the evacuation centers and affected communities.
