RESORTS in the Mamanuca are starting the year on a high after a busy Christmas and New Year period.

High occupancy rates were recorded among many of the major family resorts from both the local and tourist markets alike.

One of the most popular family getaways, Castaway Island Resort, recorded high occupancy rates expected to continue into the new year.

General manager Steven Andrews said the holiday period had passed relatively well.

“We try to make those events exciting and we theme our Christmas and New Year celebrations,” he said.

“We try to make the arrival of Santa quite special, so last year we had Santa come on an actual water sleigh that we built the sleigh and brought it on to the beach so guests were on the beach to receive Santa.

“Gifts were given out to all guest’s children and the kids of staff who were on the island.”

He said staff members were also treated to a special Christmas lunch. Bad weather also prompted staff to move the New Year celebration indoors.

Despite this, Mr Andrews said they capped off 2018 successfully.

“We had a very brilliant year, we closed 2018 emphatically and it was one of the best years we had seen in our 52 years and 2019 is also set to be a good year.

“Usually it’s the low season that we are concerned with but for us, the first quarter is usually the low season for Fiji but we are looking good and hoping to hit our forecasted occupancies so the rest of the year is looking good.”
