THE spirit of philanthropy is alive and well in the Sugar City.
Ever since the Fiji Times published the sad story of Ram Devi – the 79-year-old who was abandoned by family – it has been inundated with offers of assistance from individuals and organisations keen to lend a helping hand.
Ms Devi’s plight was uncovered by PYGMIES (Providing Young Generation Movement In Every Situation) – a youth club based n Natokowaqa, Lautoka.
She has been living without piped water and electricity for a number of years and relying on the goodwill of neighbours for water and food.
All this changed when the Water Authority of Fiji visited the septuagenarian and began carting water to her home as of Thursday last week. “They also provided some additional empty vessels for proper storage of water,” said spokesperson Peni Shute.
“WAF will continue to cart water to Ms Devi, while a permanent solution is being explored.”
This week, Lautoka-based charitable organisation – Circle Of Friends – installed solar lights, illuminating her house for the very first time.
Today, Circle of Friends will join forces with PYGMIES and begin construction of a shower and toilet facility for Ms Devi.
Australia-based charity YaadeinVision also visited Ms Devi and Punjas has made sure she will no longer have to worry about food.
