Gita passes by

With Cyclone Gita passing by a number of Pacific Islands in the week, one wonders whether it’s appropriate that disaster preparedness and training is included in primary and secondary schools.

Instead of limiting this just to the curriculum, one hopes that practical sessions are made compulsory.

For example, there could be tsunami and cyclone drills or mock exercises co-ordinated in schools, with the participation of relevant government agencies and non-governmental organisations.

Let’s ensure that our children receive an education that will earn them a living but not forget that they have the skills or knowledge needed in times of disaster, as it could very well be a life and death matter.
