Gita moves away from NZ

Update: 12:19PM TROPICAL Cyclone Gita is about 250km East of Canterbury and should continue to move away from New Zealand.
In the latest weather report released by the New Zealand MetService at 9:33am today, strong southerly winds left behind by Gita are expected to continue about Banks Peninsula until late afternoon.
Overnight, the southerly wind should move through Cook Strait and may be accompanied by thunderstorms, which could bring winds gusting close to 120 km/hr.
The watch for strong winds is lifted for all other places.
People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts as case parts of the watch are upgraded to a full warning.
