At the Girmit Day Thanksgiving and Reconciliation Service – initiated by the Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma – held at the Vodafone Arena in Suva on Sunday – vanua, church and other faith-based leaders signed the Forward Fiji Declaration.

The reconciliation service was described by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka as the foundation for creating another history of Fiji grounded in peace and reconciliation – after a deep and solemn exchange of apology and atonement between the church, the vanua and descendants of the Girmitya.

This is the content of the Forward Fiji Declaration.

‘We declare:

  • No coups but Democracy and the Rule of Law
  • No Disunity but Love and Understanding
  • No Racism but Respect and Mutual Awareness
  • No Religious Intolerance but work for the Common Good for all.”
