The signing of the Forward Fiji Declaration at the Vodafone Arena in Suva yesterday ushers in a new era for the descendants of Girmitya and the iTaukei people.

The historical proclamation describes the confession and reconciliation between the two largest races in Fiji, building a new bond and leaving behind the wrongdoings committed ever since the Girmitiyas’ entrance, such as the coups of 1987 and 2000.

According to the declaration, there won’t be any more coups in favour of democracy and the rule of law; no more divisions in favour of love and understanding; and no more racism in favour of mutual understanding and respect.

The declaration also includes no religious intolerance but works for the common good of all.

The declaration was signed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Methodist Church president the Reverend Ili Vunisuwai, Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry, and other religious organisation leaders.

Mr Vunisuwai sought forgiveness on behalf of the iTaukei people from the descendants of the Girmityas for their involvement in the 1987, 2000 and 2006 coups.

“We genuinely and openly confess our misdemeanour, by seeking deliverance and forgiveness,” he said.

“We strongly believe that the Lord our creator has seen and heard your cries, sorrows and agony.”

Descendant of the Girmitya and former politician, Amand Bhanji said it was a wonderful time to celebrate in Fiji when the largest religious organisation expresses genuine and sincerity for the wrongs committed by its followers.
