Little Raijeli Ledua Tiko has been given the gift of life, says her mother Litiana Marama.

Raijeli was the first recovery from a heart operation conducted by specialist surgeons from Singapore at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Heart Hospital in Suva.

Ms Marama said her two-year-old daughter used to have a continuous cough and regularly visit medical centres.

“When we went for her last review in July at the Nausori Health Centre, the doctor found that her heart rate was very fast,” the 26-year-old mother said.

“So they did a scan and found out she had a problem with her heart and CWMH (Colonial War Memorial Hospital) referred us to Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Heart Hospital.”

She said last month Raijeli was confirmed as one of the children to receive surgery from a world-renowned Singapore team of heart surgeons and specialists.

“She was admitted on September 19 and the next day went into surgery.

“I began crying as soon as I left her, I didn’t know what would happen but had faith she was in the hands of these doctors and God.

“After her surgery, she went into the ICU (intensive care unit) for recovery and now we are ready to go home and celebrate my daughter’s life.

“She had been nothing but lively, energetic and talkative with everyone at the hospital.”

The mother of two said she was grateful to the Sai Prema Foundation because they did not have to collect money and travel oversees for the procedure.

“Families should take care of their children and go to the hospital when something is not right, never wait for the last minute.”
