The United Kingdom is working with Dialogue Fiji to support civil society organisations and journalists strengthen public understanding and confidence in the upcoming 2022 General Election.

“We are glad to support this project, which aims to strengthen public understanding and participation in the coming election,” said British High Commissioner to Fiji George Edgar.

“Civil society and the media have an important role to play in the democratic process.”

Dialogue Fiji executive director Nilesh Lal said public trust and confidence in electoral processes was “a critical factor for acceptance of electoral outcomes, political stability and peace prospects”.

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) would also be a co-implementer in the project and provide expertise in electoral capacity building and training.

International IDEA country program manager for Fiji Adhy Aman said as the only intergovernmental organisation with the sole mandate of supporting sustainable democracy worldwide, IDEA was grateful for the opportunity provided by the British people and long-time partner Dialogue Fiji to take further part in contributing towards the consolidation of democracy in Fiji.

Through the project, funded by the British High Commission, Dialogue Fiji would undertake specific work with civil society organisations and other stakeholders to enable them to gain a deeper understanding of electoral processes, legal frameworks, roles of election stakeholders and the prevailing international standards, norms and practices relating to elections.
