GCC meeting: ‘Surreal’ experience for dance group on historical occasion

History was created at the Great Council of Chiefs meeting on Bau Island yesterday when for the first time a dance group made up of four Indo-Fijian women performed at the official opening.

Multicultural dance group leader Janvi Kumar said they were proud to be a part of history.

“We have not participated at a major event,” she said.

“This was a first performance for us in front of a huge crowd.

“It was so exciting that all the women dancers could not sleep.

“We have been preparing for this event for the past four months.”

Ms Kumar said when they were approached by the iTaukei Affairs Committee to perform at the GCC meeting, they could not turn it down.

“Whatever we learnt in school, we experienced it here during the opening of the GCC. It felt surreal.”
