Update: 5:53PM SCOTTISH athlete Eilidh Doyle will be the first ever female flag bearer for Scotland when the Commonwealth Games opens on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia this evening.

Team Scotland will begin the march into the opening ceremony at 7pm Australia time (9pm Fiji Time) today.

Doyle said she was privileged to be the first person to walk into the events as her country previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

“Being hosts of the previous game, I don’t have to watch anyone else to get an idea on how to carry the flag so a huge honor for me to be the first person to go out, and also the first female athlete for Scotland,” she said.

“We’ve got a really strong team out here, a lot of the athletes went for the Olympics in Rio so we are confident about the games.”
