Social Democratic Liberal Party members who are not loyal to the party are quitting the party on their own accord, party leader Viliame Gavoka said.

And he said party members allegedly working for another party were investigated and some had resigned.

“Our party is not removing people, but we note that those with divided loyalty are removing themselves,” Mr Gavoka said.

“We thought we had political maturity, in that the competition for leadership would be robust, but once the party leader was elected, everyone would unite as one.

“We were very disappointed that a faction went and formed another party, which was in bad faith, and we believe they will be punished by the lewe ni vanua in the elections.”

Mr Gavoka said it was mandatory for parliamentarians to contribute to the party’s coffers, normally through deductions from their salaries.

“With COVID and the hardship, the party has been lenient and not enforcing this requirement strictly.

“The party is operating comfortably with the resources it has and building up its resources to campaign for the elections,” he said.
