GAU Secondary School is ready to defend its title at the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association Maritime Zone competition at the ANZ Stadium in Suva today.
Team manager Atunaisa Qiolevu said they fielded 13 athletes for this year’s competition.
“Gau has come a long way in terms of participation and it has created some desirable results which we saw last year,” he said.
“For this year’s performance, we have analysed certain areas that needs to be improved so that we can win medals.”
He added the geographical isolation of the island had contributed to some challenges compared with the urban schools.
Qiolevu also mentioned that they want to win more medals in this year’s Coca-Cola Games which begins on Thursday.
“In 2016 was the last time we won a medal, which was a bronze for the senior boys 1500 metres.
“Last year we didn’t achieve anything, so we had gone back home regrouped and hopefully this year we can win something.
“So for this year we are ready and through the name of Jesus we can win.”
He acknowledged school principal Atama Nakalevu for the support and the former students who had waited for them on Saturday.
Last year the boys took home 18 gold, 15 silver and five bronze medals while the girls walked away with 11 gold medals and six silver.
