THE Fiji National Sports Commission is working with the Ministry of Education, Heritage & Arts with World Health Organisation in a partnership for the introduction of Fiji’s traditional games as a form physical activity that can be played by all starting from school.

A workshop scheduled to be held in two weeks will target senior schoolteachers who have some traditional understanding of what will be discussed in the workshop and also senior citizens who can help the committee achieve their goals.

Vice-president of the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union Biu Colati said the initiative of having this workshop was to revive our traditional games that used to be part of our Fijian heritage and let it be taught in schools later in the future.

“This workshop will target teachers and when they go to school, they teach the children and we are not in the stage of starting with the games, we just want to hold this workshop so that the teachers are informed and have a fair idea of what we’re trying to do.

“Turning those games into sports maybe later on, it’s a long journey but we want the revival of traditional games to be played in schools and villages,” said Colati.

More than 21 games has been collected from the data and only six games will be tested in 13 schools and the workshop targets school teachers and senior citizens to assist in the exposure of the games in schools and villages.

Meanwhile the committee is also calling out to senior citizens who are aware of some of the games that used to be played before as part of our traditions to come forward and help the committee revive the traditional games such as lutu vakatagane (men’s games) and caqe moli (women’s games) which is different from vaqiqi moli.

The workshop will be held in two weeks’ time with the time and venue to be confirmed later.
