Games’ next move

“THE 2019 Rotuma Games ended on a high note.”

These were the words of Fiji Rotuman Sports council vice-president Rupeni Fonmanu at the final day of the two-day event.

The tournament ended yesterday with team Mairo from Lautoka walking away as overall winners with three gold, one silver and four bronze medals.

Sarafui came in second with two gold, five silver and two bronze medals.

Rae’esea took third place with two gold, one silver and one bronze medal.

Newcomers Maliha settled for fourth place with one gold, two silver and no bronze medals while hosts Satarua took fifth place with one gold, no silver and two bronze medals.

Fonmanu said the next step for the Rotuman community was to try and expose the talents that were showcased on Saturday and Monday.

“We have seen the performance of the players in each sport and also have identified some very talented individuals so the next step is to try and include them in our teams that play at the national club level for every sport,” said Fonmanu.

“We want to get them exposed so that one day they would hopefully don the national white jersey and represent our country,” he added. Fonmanu said the response from the western teams had created a huge boost to the event.

“This year’s tournament was definitely better than last year because our western teams came in full force and we thank them for coming down. That just shows the passion they have towards this cause,” said Fonmanu.
