THE Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre )FWCC) is the sponsor for the Raka 7s women’s cup tournament, which is also part of the upcoming Raka 7s tournament that will be held on November 30 to December 1 at the National ANZ Stadium in Laucala Bay, Suva.

FWCC coordinator Shamima Ali said sports was one of the new strategies that had been used globally towards ending violence against women and promoting gender equality.

“It is important to have more women and girls participating in sports like rugby, particularly for Fiji because rugby is an important sport and it is to create a level playing field that when men and women play, they are playing towards equality,” Ali said.

Raka 7s tournament director Ropate Kauvesi thanked the FWCC for the generous sponsorship in supporting local rugby.

“I have witnessed first-hand the effect of discrimination against women in the sports arena so this partnership means a lot to me personally and I am happy that this year, Raka 7s will be adopting the same values into the tournament,” Kauvesi said.

The women’s cup will be called the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre Cup.
